Just imagine if you walked into your backyard where the ants were 6 feet long, the ladybugs had 10 foot wingspans and you could barely see over a blade of grass. That’s the world you’ll explore inside the Houston Zoo’s special summer exhibit, "Extreme Bugs!"
Walk through the entrance of "Extreme Bugs!" and you’ll step into a backyard unlike any you’ve seen before. This backyard is filled with lush green trees and plants, larger-than-life picnic cookies and even an enormous can of bug repellant.
But that’s just the beginning.
The real wonders of this backyard environment are the bugs themselves. Not just any bugs but 13 giant, animatronic bugs. You’ll see friendly ants, a ladybug, a grasshopper, a dragonfly, a beautiful Madagascar sunset moth, a beetle that sprays water, and a firefly that lights up with the turn of a handle.
"Extreme Bugs!" also features some bugs you would probably want to avoid in real life – like an emperor scorpion and a Mexican red-knee tarantula.
Walk the winding trail of this unique backyard and you’ll be amazed at the size and detail of these colossal creatures. Each animatronic animal looks just like its real-life inspiration. From the color to the placement of the eyes, these "Extreme Bugs!" look realistic, just up to 60 times larger than the real thing.
"Extreme Bugs!" is a must see this summer at the Houston Zoo.
About Bugs
Many insects provide essential benefits for your home garden. Ladybugs are a natural predator of aphids and mites. Butterflies aren’t just beautiful. They’re pollinators just like beetles and bees. Pollinators move pollen allowing plants to produce fruit and seeds. More than one-third of the world’s food supply depends on pollinators.
Visit www.houstonzoo.org/pollinators to find out more and celebrate these important animals with us on June 21 and 22 at this year’s Pollinator Palooza at the Houston Zoo, sponsored by TXU Energy and United Airlines.
