Welcome to Lone Star Lyric's 8th Season! The Lone Star Lyric 2014 Summer Festival includes two weekends of fully staged lyric theater performances and semi-staged concerts.
The festival opens with an All-American selection of cabaret in the "Summer Cabaret."
The main stage production, "American Shorts: One-Act Operas Made in the USA," includes a collection of six over-the-top comedies and unexpected mini dramas by Leonard Bernstein, Jake Heggie, Milton Granger, Douglas Moore, William Bolcom and Samuel Barber, sung in English. These boutique-sized operas are presented during the fictional weekly opera review cable program, “American Shorts.”
Guest host Dr. John Lienhard introduces and offers commentary. No matter what the ‘critics’ say, it will be a five star event.
Finally, join the entire 2014 Festival cast for a concert of Broadway showstoppers at the "LSL Follies." This end of season party will be an affair to remember.
All the events take place at Ovations Night Club. With fourteen festival productions, Houston will be humming all summer long. Come on out and re-experience the lyric theater!
SUMMER CABARET – Vaudeville to Tin Pan Alley
June 13 at 8pm and June 15 at 5pm
Before radio, before the movies could talk and before television, there was vaudeville, a popular variety show from 1890-1920. The music of Tin Pan Alley’s songwriters and song pluggers like, Irving Berlin (“Blue Skies”), George M. Cohan (“Give My Regards to Broadway”), George & Ira Gershwin (“Fascinating Rhythm”), became the jazz standards sung by everyone from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall and Michael Bublé.
AMERICAN SHORTS – Summer-Sized Opera – Made for TV
June 14, 20 and 21 at 8pm
The season heading, American Shorts, represents the opera portion of our two-weekend festival. This program features four one-act comic operas and mini dramas, each presented in the format of a fictional television studio, K-LSL. Sung in English, these works illustrate the bounty of American creativity by composers Samuel Barber, Milton Granger, Douglas Moore and Jake Heggie. In true LSL style, we also reimagined a few hilarious songs by William Bolcom and Leonard Bernstein.
All of these summer-sized pieces will be performed in only two hours!
We are thrilled to have two very special guests leading American Shorts: Dr. John Lienhard, creator and host of NPR’s “Engines of our Ingenuity” and Music Director, Stephen Dubberly, opera music director at the University of North Texas and associate conductor and chorus master for Fort Worth Opera.
LSL FOLLIES – A Toast to Broadway
June 22 at 5pm
There are no rules when it comes to what can be done on a Broadway stage. And when LSL sinks our teeth into a Broadway hit… let’s just say that we leave an impression. New York has “Forbidden Broadway”, but here in Texas it’s practically outlawed!
This frothy send up to the Great White Way’s biggest hits will have you singing in your seats and asking for more. So before the curtains close on Lone Star Lyric’s 8th Season, come back out to hear all the artists from our 2014 season for one last performance night!
