Hailing from Chicago’s renowned Wax Trax Records stable of bands, Thrill Kill Kult creators Groovie Mann (lead vocals) and Buzz McCoy (keys/production) have been conjuring up sonic tales of blasphemy, sexcapades and kitschy horror for over 25 years. Their sound is a concoction of experimental, disco, rock, new wave, lounge and glam, interlaced with their signature “sampled dialogue” – a reflection of the duo’s musical influences, and insight into the their taste in cinema.
In fact, the original concept of MLWTTKK was to be trashy B-movie, in the style of John Waters and Russ Meyers. Yet without much film experience and access to video equipment, the project was scrapped, only to be transformed into a musical group – something both boys had more expertise in. Their over-the-top stage show was best described as "sensory overload" (featuring a revolving door of weird characters, props, and intense visuals) and a “Cabaret From Hell” vibe, arousing the curiosity of the kids and the media, establishing the group as one of America’s premier “industrial-dance” acts.
The Thrill Kill Kult issued several releases between 1989 and 1991: a self-titled EP, plus the full-lengths I See Good Spirits and I See Bad Spirits, Kooler Than Jesus, Confessions of a Knife, and Sexplosion!
Between 1994 and 2010, they also released the albums 13 Above the Night, Hit & Run Holiday, Crime for All Seasons, The Reincarnation of Luna, Golden Pillz: The Luna Remixes, Gay, Black & Married, Filthiest Show in Town, and Death Threat. The band’s 13th studio album, and their latest in 5 years, Spooky Tricks will be released in May 2014.
In addition to their own releases, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult has contributed tracks to several movie soundtracks, including Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, Greg Araki's Nowhere, and the hit flick The Crow (in the latter of which the group made a cameo appearance); and over the years, has toured with such renowned (and similarly styled) bands as Siouxie and the Banshees, Lords of Acid, EMF, and Marilyn Manson.
