Religious and Spiritual Boundaries in Secular Psychotherapy (In Person)

Spirituality is vitally important to many people, both clients and mental health professionals. Yet, it is also crucial to honor the boundary between religion and mental health. How does a secular counselor remain open to a client’s spirituality without pushing a particular agenda? Can a therapist ethically approach prayer in secular counseling? How does a counselor own their spirituality yet respect the client’s different spiritual perspective? How do you define religious boundaries in psychotherapy? What is acceptable, and what is a boundary violation regarding spirituality? This workshop will provide opportunities for counselors to explore these ethical concerns through reflection, discussion, experiential exercises, and case discussion.
