The prize: a slot in this year’s line-up for the "Word Around Town Poetry Tour." The Word Around Town (WAT) tour is an annual week-long poetry marathon held in Houston at a different venue each night of the week. The mission of the WAT tour is to introduce poets to different venues and to new audiences in the Houston area.
Now in it's 9th year, poets featured on the tour continue to range in styles from academic to slam and spoken word to experimental. The venues showcased on the tour are just as diverse from the local coffee shop to community centers, bars and non profit institutions.
The WAT tour exists to entertain while creating a forum for poets to find new audiences.
HOW THE DRAFT WILL WORK:
Each poet will perform one poem in an open mic setting in front of the organizers and audience. The organizers will announce their decisions the following week via email.
Poets will be judged on Content, Delivery, Vocal Expression, and Stage Presence.
The event begins promptly at 4pm and ends around 8pm.
No cover charge. Free for all. Come watch or participate.
But wait there's more!
Out of town bands will be taking the stage after 9pm and anchored by one out of the ordinary Houston band.
Shilo Brown will be traveling from Norman, Oklahoma performing his set of Hillbilly Blues, Folk, and Americana.
Smoke Stack Relics will be traveling from Golden, Colorado performing their set of Blues and Swamp Rock.
Good Neighbor will be traveling from Westminster, Colorado performing their set of Folk and Americana.
Last but certainly not least is a Houston-based, out-of-this-world band called The Demonic Hen who are a group of militant vegans that spread the word about health foods — performing as food themselves with their radical set of Roots Rock.
Please stick around and support these bands.
Admission for the live bands is a donation of $7.
