Houston Family Arts Center presents The Beaux’ Stratagem – A delightful period farce! The Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) Main Stage production of "The Beaux’ Stratagem" opens Friday, May 23, 2014, and runs weekends at the HFAC Garza Mainstage through Sunday, June 15, 2014.
In the tradition of the best Bob Hope and Bing Crosby road shows, before there was Hope and Crosby, "The Beaux’ Stratagem" follows the adventures of two fortune-seeking gentleman with hardly a shilling between them.
George Farquhar’s comedy, adapted by Thornton Wilder and Ken Ludwig, is a comedic look at what happens when people fall in love, and how that humor changes when they marry.
As the two ne’re-do-wells seek to marry rich and eligible ladies, they discover, with hilarious results, that there is more to marriage than just matching up account books; there is also love.
"The Beaux’ Stratagem" is the remarkable creation of three playwrights working in three different centuries. Described as “sheer laugh-out-loud fun” (The Free Lance-Star), the play “glides confidently from silly to wry, from the pratfall to the riposte” (The Washington Post) and is “a delightful romp that seamlessly reaches across the centuries to combine the old with the new” (Theater Mania).
"The Beaux’ Stratagem" is directed by Lisa Garza, HFAC Assistant Artistic Director and recent recipient of the Distinguished Merit Award from American Association of Community Theatre. Produced by Michael Montgomery, with costumes designed by Amber Stepanik; Fight choreography by Jonny Ringo; and Lighting Design by John Wind.
The local Houston cast features J Christopher Blanchard (Sullen), Joshua Clark (Aimwell), Justin Finch (Archer), Cora Hemphill (Dorinda), Ananka Kohnitz (Lady Bountiful), Sarah McQueen (Mrs. Sullen) and Wade Gonsoulin (Gloss).
"A playful 1960s kind of vibe shines through in Ludwig's adaptation. Just as in the early 1700s, it was a time of carefree abandon, when social mores of the past were being abandoned and new ideals were explored. This freed men and women to approach their relationships on more equal footing, with, in the case of "The Beaux' Stratagem," hilarious results!
Our uniquely talented cast is allowing us to get at some of the ridiculous situations that arise in the plot and mine them for all that they're worth." – Lisa Garza, Director
"The Beaux’ Stratagem" is supported by HFAC Season Sponsors Dr. Mario and Lisa Garza, National Oilwell Varco, and Community Impact Newspapers and is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
