Writers in the Schools 40th Anniversary Gala - Chapter 40: An Odyssey of Impact

Chaired by Liz and Steve Bender, the 40th-anniversary WITS gala will honor the nonprofit’s founder, Phillipe Lopate, and other heroes of WITS’ 40-year journey. The event also will commemorate the long-standing partnerships fostered with Houston-area schools in addition to students and alums.

Over the past 40 years in Houston, WITS has been on a journey to inspire students to use their writing and voices to promote change in their educational and communal spheres. In doing so, WITS has learned what it means to be leaders and advocates of the literary arts. Through successful programs in schools, community centers, hospitals and more, the pages of students’ stories have come to life, providing opportunities for personal growth and the ability to see themselves in their own odyssey. WITS’s mission lives on and grows year after year, inked on the pages of the Bayou City.
