  • Pearls Book Club
    Pearls Book Club
    Association/Club/Group
The PEARLS book club seeks to be a book club that allows the reader to have a vast experience while reading books. We won’t limit our genre, but will seek out books that can broaden our mind, embrace our soul, and enlighten our heart. The PEARLS Book Club comes together to nourish our love of reading and create a safe environment to relate and explore literature. (Safe environment: an environment of trust and confidentiality).  The PEARLS book club started in October of 2012 and since then we have read a host of books. We have read books that have taken us from the memoirs of a fallen Mayor of Detroit seeking to tell his side of a political downfall, “Surrender – Kwame Kilpatrick,” to “The Energy Bus- Jon Gordon”- where we learned to fuel our lives with positive energy to attract positive people. We traveled from Africa to Great Britain while understanding immigration asylums and deportation and its disproportional effect on people of color as we read “Little Bee-Chris Cleave”. We went through a range of emotions while reading “The Twelve tribes of Hattie –Ayanna Mathis”.  We revisited a brother, a sister, a cousin, an uncle even ourselves while experiencing the children of Hattie. We fell in love with Ava as her fabulous career and power plans were smashed to bits by the cold reality of a positive HIV test. We walked with her as she found the courage to return to her roots to sort things out and find true love – “What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day – Pearl Cleage”. These are just a few of the experiences we have embraced through reading.
