Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl

Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl (DAT) is a grassroots Aztec dance group that is dedicated to preserving as well as nurturing the indigenous cultures of México as a means of fostering unity and connectedness between all cultures. Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl has spent several years, through presentations and programs, teaching the Aztec traditions to youth and their families, particularly in Houston’s most critical and economically challenging communities. Danza Azteca Taxcayolotl is made up of people of all ages and professions: educators, students, artists, business professionals and community organizers who contribute to our community on a daily basis through their professions. However, they also continue to empower new generations to succeed by sharing the pride and beauty of their culture and traditions reflected in the Danza Azteca tradition.

Regardless of the constant commercialization and modernization of Flamenco, Mama Flamenca and La Hija Flamenca (as affectionately called by their many students) strive to preserve the authenticity of Flamenco and to present Flamenco to the public as the gypsies of Andalucia intended Flamenco to be. Devastating Rhythm

Ms. Wenda L. Koon (pictured), formerly Artistic Director of Resurrection Dance Company, has created a new brainchild. In September of 2006, Ms. Koon closed down Resurrection Dance Company (RDC). Now, Devastating Rhythm is born….at last! In 1990, Ms. Koon was 17 and thought the name would sound cool (a teenager’s thoughts!). At that time, street jazz was coming into the mix and the music was becoming more street influenced. Only 17 years old, still in school, and dance classes; Ms. Koon bypassed her “dream name” and with her father’s encouragement formed Dancer Enterprise. A dance inspired business that was established to build her credit (a smart move on dad’s part).Dancer Enterprise was born and slowly evolved into private lessons, competitions, classes, even a professional dance company that was formed in 2002. Resurrection Dance Company was born in January of 2005. Ms. Koon decided to shortened the name to RDC in late 2005! Devastating Rhythm is a dance troupe that will be performing jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, modern influence works, ballet, and character (Broadway). In addition to the style of dance, choreography will be set to the music of Depeche Mode, Madonna, U2, Simple Minds, and others. We will be performing at regional dance competitions, monthly mini performances; and hope to be invited by churches, businesses’ functions, and special engagements.

"Dharma" is an ancient Sanskrit word. There are literally thousands of definitions of Dharma, owing in part to the subjective nature of translations, context, usage, and the somewhat ethereal nature of the study of Buddhism. Susan and I are both students of Buddhism, that is to say, we study Buddhism, we are not Buddhists, we are maybe not anything, but seekers of the truth. Dharma for us could be best defined as the spiritual work that you do in your life to return to yourself, your center. Using this model, you could say the Dharma of the sun is to produce light and heat, the Dharma of a dog is to lay about and sleep. Our Dharma is to be of service to others – to feed our friends. Discovery Green

Discovery Green is a public-private partnership initiated in mid-2004 when the sale of the privately-owned green space across from the George R. Brown Convention Center was announced. The land was acquired in late 2004. There are three entities working together to realize the initial vision for Discovery Green. City of Houston. Mayor Bill White initiated the public-private partnership to secure the site for a park, and City Council approved a contribution of 6.4 acres of land toward the project and $7,900,000 toward acquisition of the remaining 5.4 acres. The city also created the Corporation, and it will contribute $750,000 annually toward maintenance of the park. In early 2006, the city approved funding of $21,500,000 for a garage under a part of the park. Houston Downtown Park Corporation. The Corporation is a public local government corporation that owns the land. Upon the park’s completion, the Corporation will dedicate Discovery Green as a public park. The Corporation has entered into agreements with the Conservancy for development of the park and underground garage and for operation of the park. Discovery Green Conservancy. The Conservancy is a private non-profit created to develop and operate Discovery Green. It will be the first private non-profit organization in Houston to be responsible for managing all aspects of a major public park’s ongoing operations. The Conservancy contributed $16,000,000 toward initial land acquisition and is raising funds totaling $36,000,000 and managing the project’s development. The Conservancy also is under contract to build the underground garage.

Farrell Dyde Dance Theatre was founded to facilitate the creation and presentation of new dance theater works by Farrell Dyde and other like-minded choreographers as well as to educate the public about dance as an art form. Goals are: To present, through the medium of adventurous dance theater, a clear message that provokes and challenges existing values and perceptions, while at the same time offering the hope of change. To represent through a disciplined, ordered and inspired physical medium an idealized spirit that is supportive and replenishing. To educate audiences primarily through the art itself, but also with programs designed to meet the awareness level of specific targeted groups. To provide historical perspective by presenting works that relate to the past in ways that illuminate the present. To reaffirm values that have been lost in an era of rapidly advancing technology while utilizing that technology to enlarge the human spirit.
