5th Ward Cultural Arts District

Established in January 2020, the 5th Ward Cultural Arts District located in Houston’s Historic 5th Ward community is one large masterpiece. It is a place where art is a way of living, from its food, music, and sculptures; to its Historic buildings and gathering spaces like the Historic Deluxe Theater or the Iconic live music venue Club Matinee (Cotton Club of the South.) The 5th Ward Cultural Arts District is a living cultural arts destination and the center of Houston’s African American history and culture.

Today, 6th Position Dance Company provides dance classes for both children and adults alike at 6th Position Dance Studio. Founded in 2010, Bayou Village School is a community of parents, educators and other area members who share the goal of establishing an accredited Waldorf School (Pre-K through grade 8, and eventually a high school) in Central Houston. Currently we offer an Early Childhood program and elementary grades classes 1-5. Our campus has several classrooms and a lovely outdoor play space located just North of downtown and East of the Heights neighborhood. The school mission is the following: Bayou Village School wishes to provide children with a rich experience that prepares them to meet the challenges of our world and the future with clarity of thought, a caring heart, and the confidence to initiate change. We are dedicated to finding new ways to make our curriculum accessible to all families who wish to provide it for their children. Be Covered Texas

Information & Education campaign regarding the Affordable Care Act. Be Covered Texas is an education and outreach campaign that helps Texans benefit from new health insurance opportunities. The campaign and its 169 community partners work with individuals and organizations to provide user-friendly bilingual information and community support with the ultimate goal of helping Texans “Be Covered.” The campaign is fully funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.

This non profit fundraising system ends the suffering about fundraising & builds lifelong donors. Benevon was founded in 1996 by Terry Axelrod, a professional fundraiser and social worker who committed herself to teaching others her proven, successful model for fundraising. She designed the Benevon Model for Sustainable Funding after working for more than twenty-five years in the nonprofit sector.

Benjamin Davis High School Theatre

Davis Sr. High School opened its doors in the Fall of 2012, and within the first year we have produced several productions for students, faculty and staff, and the Greater-Houston community. In, October, 2012 we produced Romeo & Juliet, in February, 2013, To be young, gifted, and black, and in March, 2013, our UIL One-Act Play Contest Entry – Bury the Dead, where our students received several major acting awards. Also, we attended Texas Renaissance Festival and performed at the Texas Education Theatre Association Convention. In 2014, we competed and advance in UIL One-Act Play contest, with the play, Before it Hits Home by Cheryl L. West and garnered several major acting and technical crew awards from Honorable Mention All-Star Cast to Best Actor for District 18-5A. We are looking forward to an even bigger and more exciting year, with the slate of shows we are going to produce. General Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Senior High School is Aldine Independent School District’s newest high school. The school is named after the historic Tuskegee Airmen Commander, General Benjamin O. Davis Jr.

Founded in 1973, Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston was named in honor of the late Sarah Campbell Blaffer, a noted Houston arts patron and collector.
