Congregation Beth Jacob Galveston
Congregation Beth Jacob Galveston, which nearly met its demise in 2008 after Hurricane Ike ravaged its buildings, ushers in its 85th anniversary year under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Todd Doctor.
An egalitarian synagogue in the conservative tradition, the Congregation strives to support the principles of study of Torah, service to the community, and deeds of compassion.
The Congregation’s roots extend 175 years into Galveston’s past. Between 1868 and 1930 the Island was home to two Orthodox Synagogues. In the spring of 1930 the two congregations: The Hebrew Orthodox Benevolent Association and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, one led by Russian immigrants, the other by Austro-Hungarian Jews, merged to create Congregation Beth Jacob, which was chartered in 1931.
Its current building on the corner of 24th St. and Avenue K was dedicated on April 10, 1932.
