Black Professional Cowboys & Cowgirls Association
    Festivals;  Special Events
Black Cowboys, legendary African American figures who drove great cattle herds across the early west, have been idealized in motion pictures, television, and books. The cowboy serves as the great American icon representing courage, hardiness, and independence. Images of black cowboys have been scarce in popular culture giving the false impression that African Americans were not among the men and women who settled the west. In reality, by the time the huge cattle drives of cowboy legend ended, at least 5,000 black men worked as cowboys. The word cowboy refers to the men who drove herds of cattle from ranchland in Texas over hundreds of miles of rough and dangerous terrain to the stockyards in the north. A typical crew consisted of one trail chief, eight cowboys, a wrangler to take care of the horses, and a cook. One historian estimates that an average crew would have included two or three black cowboys. Black cowboys are an important part of our past, present, and future. We strive to keep the legend alive and growing.Mission“Benefiting Youth and Supporting Education”PurposeCreate awareness and recognition for African-American Men and Women who have made significant contributions in the African-American Community. Caffeine Crawl was developed by The LAB (formerly LAB 5702) to give enthusiasts of quality-driven coffee, tea, soda and chocolate a one-of-a-kind experience that has never been created. The Crawl is designed to give individuals an opportunity to learn, share and experience what the passionate baristas, tea soms, specialty coffee roasters and other local, artisan producers in their communities bring to the table. These products are such a part of our daily lives, from our morning cups of coffee to the evening nightcap of tea or treat of artisan chocolate. Many of us have embraced the craft and passion behind the teams of people that help produce these products and make our communities a better place to live. Through Caffeine Crawl, fans like us are being given a chance to learn more about the quality, technique and process of the products. Caffeine Crawl will spread about metropolitan areas, fostering relationships between the public and local specialty shops and manufacturers. HOW: Each host city for a Crawl has anywhere from 6 to 24 locations selected for Crawl attendees to visit. Depending on the number of participating businesses, routes are created visiting 5-6 places per route. At every stop on the tour, there is a different, hands-on presentation, and a selection of free drink or chocolate samples redeemable to attendees only. Each city will have a selected charity, which 100% of the proceeds from the host city's After Crawl party raffle will be donated. Be a part of this innovative concept that's building a community that reaches from one side of the bar to the other.

  • Children's Theatre Festival - UH School of Theatre
Children's Theatre Festival - UH School of Theatre
    Festivals;  Theatre
The Children’s Theatre Festival was co-founded by Sidney Berger and Bren Dubay in the summer of 1978. Opening with more enthusiasm than budget, the first season was a case of instant success. Houston’s appetite for a professional children’s theatre has been so clearly evident that the number of performances has continually increased to meet public demand. Now, more than 35,000 youngsters and their families attend the CTF productions each summer season. Even with additional performances, the curtain continues to rise on predominately sold-out houses. One of CTF’s goals is the commissioning and development of new plays for the child audience. Among the notable playwrights and composers who have premiered new work for the Festival are Ntozake Shange (FOR COLORED GIRLS…)., Mark Bramble (42nd STREET, BARNUM), Charles Strouse (ANNIE, APPLAUSE) and Jerry Bock (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, SHE LOVES ME). The Festival has also developed programs for children from special interest groups, by shadowing performances for the hearing-impaired in collaboration with ILLUMINATIONS, THEATRE For THE DEAF, introducing signing characters who participate in the action of the play. The upcoming seasons will continue our efforts to bring quality theatre to the children of our community.
