    48 Hour Film Project, Inc.
    Festivals
The 48 Hour Film Project is an exciting fast paced independent filmmaking competition which encourages filmmakers to get out there and make a film rather than talk about making a film. In cities around the world, teams of filmmakers race the clock to make a film in a single weekend. All creative activity – writing, filming, editing, etc – must all be done within this time frame. At the start of the competition, teams draw a genre and are assigned a character, prop and line of dialogue that must appear in the film – after that it’s up to them.

    Festivals;  Special Events
The ACLU of Texas is proud to be the eighth largest ACLU affiliate in the United States, with more than 14,000 card-carrying members across our state. Sustained by a dedicated board of directors, a small staff and dozens of dedicated volunteers, the ACLU of Texas and its predecessor, the Texas Civil Liberties Union, have been at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights in Texas since 1938. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is our nation’s guardian of liberty. We work daily in courts, legislatures and in the community to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States. The American system of government is founded on two counterbalancing principles: that the majority of the people governs, through democratically elected representatives; and that the power even of a democratic majority must be limited, to ensure individual rights. The ACLU has maintained the position that civil liberties must be respected, even in times of national emergency. The ACLU is supported by annual dues and contributions from more than 500,000 members, plus grants from private foundations and individuals. We do not receive any government funding.

Since 1993, artists hold a community “open studios” event downtown. Every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the urban “alternative lifestyle”. The mission of the ARTCRAWL is to provide the public with a unique urban experience by viewing the individual artist studios and exhibition spaces where Houston area artists live and work. The Original ARTCRAWL event evolved from this neighborhood cluster of artists’ warehouses in Downtown Houston. The cultural and social interaction provided by opening the studios not only makes the artwork and artists more accessible, but also increases the Arts’ presence in the eyes of the community. The more we, as artists, educate the public about Art the more receptive they will be in participating in the Arts. “Art should never try to be popular. The public should try to make itself artistic.” – Oscar Wilde

The first Greek immigrants to arrive in Galveston, worshipped with the Serbians and the Russians at the Sts. Constantine and Helen Church at 4109 Avenue L. When the Greek community decided to have its own church, the records reflect that in April, 1933, the first General Assembly was held. At this historic meeting the present name, “Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church”, was chosen. As a result of the organization of the church board and parish, a decision was later reached to purchase for $7,500.00 the Evangelical Lutheran Church on the northeast corner of 19 and Ball, now the site of the present church and related buildings. The holy Synod, then headquartered in New York City, was requested to provide a priest to serve this parish, and on March 15, 1934, Father D. Zikakis performed his first holy liturgy in the now all-Greek Orthodox Church. In February 2006 Father Michael Platanis and his family arrived in our community. Father Michael performed his first service at our Church on February 12, 2006 as a full time priest. He brings to our community a wealth of youth and knowledge that will help carry our community forward for many years.
