Public Poetry showcases the enduring power of poetry. We pay poets for their work and initiate collaborative partnerships that enrich the cultural economy, delivering poetry to audiences in Houston and beyond. Our vision is to explore the power of poetry to spread appreciation and enjoyment of poetry in Houston and beyond; to bring high quality poetry events to public venues; to promote a diverse mix of poetry including academia, spoken word, youth, featuring well-regarded local poets, as well as regional and national voices, and to increase awareness of poetry’s varied forms and applications for non-poets and poets alike.

Southern Apache Museum Inc.

Locinda Chance Landry is Founder/Curator/President of Southern Apache Museum Inc. a 501 ( c ) non profit organization. Chance is retired and was a member of the MWBE from 2004-2012. Her business Downtown Treats was a ma and pa stand at Hermann Park from 1994-2017. In the eighty Ms. Landry was a geological/geophysical draughtsman, for 15 years. She is also a caricature artist, face painter and has worked with the adobe illustrator in 1984 until current. She decided to open Southern Apache Museum (SAM) when she recognized a need to educate the general public on the invisible Native American Indian population in Houston. Southern Apache Museum was born Jan. 2012 at the Northwest Mall in Houston TX. The mall closed down in 2017 and is now one of three proposed sites for the bullet train that will go from Houston to Dallas in 30 minutes. The Native American Indian community is in the process of looking for another building to house their community center. They are working hard to raise money to have the virtual museum at apache museum.org become a realty and will be a permanent home in Houston for all Indigenous people.

They are bringing BROADWAY and New York Professionals right here to Houston to teach our awesome Texas kids ages 5-18! Founded in 1978, Stages makes plays and tells stories that invite everyone to live more deeply and love more boldly. The common link throughout our work is a focus on sharing compelling human stories in intimate performance spaces that allow audiences to connect with both the art on stage and the people who help create it. Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer overall, and the largest outside of Houston’s downtown theater district. Stages is one of the region’s leading artistic employers, producing an average of 12 productions per year totaling hundreds of performances and welcoming 75,000+ visitors each season. In January 2020, Stages opened The Gordy, a new $35.4 million three-theater venue that will transform how Houston artists and audiences experience theater. Almost all of Stages’ shows are rehearsed and constructed on-site in Houston, brought to life by an exceptional community of locally-based artists and crafts people along with occasional guest directors, actors and designers from around the world. For more than a decade Stages has made a strong investment in nurturing emerging artists and administrators who have now become field leaders and working professionals in companies around the country.

Delta H Con is a woman owned company based out of the Houston Area. Our members are folks that have been gamers or anime lovers for years. Some of us have even worked in the gaming or anime industry before. We also enjoy curling up on these lovely rainy days we have had so much lately and watching a good anime. We’ve made our pilgrimages to the big national gaming conventions and looked for the little local ones to fill the time between mega gatherings. Sadly we found they were rather sparse in our area. So for all you gamers and anime aficionados out there finding the same long stretches of months going by without the big adventures of a con welcome to Delta H Con. We hope you will join us for our annual convention and find a home here. We look forward to meeting you all and joining you for three game and anime filled days.

The Fig Writer's Studio

The Fig Writer’s Studio is an inspired space for writers of all ages and skill levels to learn about and explore the art and craft of creative writing. We offer workshops in fiction, poetry, non-fiction and everything in between. We also offer fun and engaging afterschool creative writing programs for children. Our Children’s Workshop is a lively and intellectually engaging program that introduces children to the art and craft of writing through storytelling and imagination. Our program endeavors to entertain and foster creative expression, as well as explore the function and values of writing, stimulate our children’s imaginations, and clarify thinking. Our goal is to teach our children to write compelling stories, with creative transitions, character desires, obstacles, climax, dialogue and resolve. Our programs are offered in partnership with Houston schools and educational institutions, and provide children with a critical set of skills and tools to navigate the human experience. We believe creative writing offers children a safe space to make sense of the world around them, as well as a way to explore humor, narrative complexity, abstraction, and metaphor. We also believe in having fun, encouraging whimsy and wonder, and being inspired to write!

Up with People

Up with People exists today to inspire young people to make a difference in their world. Up with People is a global education organization which aims to bring the world together through service and music. The unique combination of international travel, service learning, leadership development and performing arts offers students an unparalleled experience and a pathway to make a difference in the world, one community at a time. Since 1965, Up with People has provided young people from around the world a unique international education experience unmatched by any other program. More than 22,000 young leaders from 131 countries have traveled abroad with Up with People and are now part of our global alumni network. Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, music and the arts have always been an integral part of our student experience. As the world has changed, so too has our program. Once primarily impacting communities through our musical productions, the current Up with People program also addresses the very real need for young people from around the world to become global citizens, to develop an appreciation of diversity and cultures, and to learn the value of volunteerism as a way to make a positive impact on the world. Today, our distinct one or two semester program takes participants to nearly 20 communities on at least two different continents. In each community, students will spend 4 – 7 days living with host families, volunteering with local non-profit or civic organizations, attending educational workshops, learning about the region, and performing a 2-hour professional stage show for the members of the community. In each community we visit, we work closely with our sponsors and selected beneficiaries to make a lasting positive impact through hundreds of volunteer hours performed by our students. Our stay is brief, but our impact is long-lasting. We work hard to raise awareness for local non-profit and civic organizations and inspire community members to get involved in their communities and “find their voice” to make a positive impact, locally and globally.

Now in its 66th year, Young Audiences of Houston implements over 3,037 programs each year with 184 talented artists that reach over 297,832 students and teachers annually at schools, libraries, community centers, and hospitals with limited programming for college and adult continuing education programs, Young Audiences of Houston primarily serves children Early Childhood through the 12th grade within the boundaries of the 51 greater Houston area school districts, including counties of Harris, Montgomery, Liberty, Waller, Brazoria, Matagorda, Fort Bend, Jefferson, Polk, Galveston, Orange, Wharton, Jeff Davis, and Jackson. We are at the forefront of arts education in Houston, pursuing equitable access to the arts through systems change efforts, sharing our expertise, and supporting programs and resources to our communities most in need across the Texas region.
