Casa Ramirez FOLKART Gallery
With its warm atmosphere and special color, Casa Ramirez attracts all visitors and celebrates the rich and vibrant Latino/Hispanic culture, especially of Mexico, through art, crafts, books, apparel and exhibits.
The gallery exhibits and sells all kinds of Mexican craftwork, from portraits, antiques and ceramic, clay, metal and wood artifacts and figures, to the most varied artistic elements. You can admire the creation of artists and artisans.
Exhibits include Amor Eterno-The Heart Show and Nuestra Cultura for Cinco de Mayo. We also have crosses, images of faith, and tributes to La Virgen de Guadalupe.
We are well-known for our Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead exhibit and classes on November 1st and 2nd. Events include book readings, Day of the Dead altar building classes, and sugar skull demonstrations.
For El Dia de los Muertos (the Catholic holiday All Souls Day) November 2, the store is adorned with 14 altars honoring the deceased, complete with calaveras de azucar, votive candles (to light the way for the souls), incense, yellow flowers called Xempoaltxochitl (similar to the African marigold), pan de muerto, the deceased's favorite food and/or favorite drink, their photo, and favorite toys or items. It is an educational experience and cultural enrichment to learn from these exhibits how death is realistically accepted without fear.
Located on W 19th St in the Houston Heights, we are open every day except Monday.
