For El Dia de los Muertos (the Catholic holiday All Souls Day) November 2, the store is adorned with 14 altars honoring the deceased, complete with calaveras de azucar, votive candles (to light the way for the souls), incense, yellow flowers called Xempoaltxochitl (similar to the African marigold), pan de muerto, the deceased's favorite food and/or favorite drink, their photo, and favorite toys or items. It is an educational experience and cultural enrichment to learn from these exhibits how death is realistically accepted without fear. Located on W 19th St in the Houston Heights, we are open every day except Monday.

  • Clann Kelly School of Irish Dance
Clann Kelly School of Irish Dance
Dance;  Educational;  Kids & Families;  Traditional Arts
About Clann Kelly Clann Kelly (meaning Kelly Family in Irish) is an Irish dancing school established in 2016 and is registered with An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha, The Irish Dancing Commission, in Dublin, Ireland. We teach both boys and girls—ages 5 to adult—the steps, rhythms and movements of Irish dancing. This dance form is an excellent way for children and adults both to stay active and strong. From our smallest beginners to our champions, Clann Kelly dancers strive for excellence both on stage and in the classroom. Though competition is not a requirement for attendance, Clann Kelly encourages dancers to compete at the appropriate level with Anna’s guidance. Our Teacher Anna Kelly has been dancing nearly her entire life, beginning her journey in Irish dancing at age seven. Anna took Irish dancing throughout her childhood and early adulthood in Houston and New Orleans, beginning with Southern Region pioneer Paul Tynan. After Paul’s passing, she began dancing with Colm O’Maoileidigh, where she danced for more than 20 years. During her dancing days she also had the good fortune to study under such teachers as Eimir Ni Mhaoileidigh, New Orleanian Mary Ann McGrath Swaim, and Michael Smith. In her competitive career, Anna advanced to Open Championships, the premiere level of Irish dancing. She attended the Southern Region Oireachtas for three years and qualified for the World Championships each time, representing the Southern Region by dancing at the Worlds in Belfast, Ireland in 2004. After working as an assistant teacher for many years, Anna took the TCRG exam, an exhaustive test to become a registered Irish dancing teacher, in October 2014 and passed on the first try. Today she is the owner and founder of Clann Kelly and is excited to share her love of Irish dancing with her hometown. Values Clann Kelly seeks to present an atmosphere for learning Irish dancing that is positive, healthy and fosters friendships between all our dancers. Our school’s name was chosen because we truly believe that when you enter Clann Kelly, you’re not just gaining a dance school—you’re gaining an extended family. “Nothing Without Labour” is the motto of County Down, where Anna’s mother’s side of the family is from, as well as the unofficial school motto. We know that each medal or trophy earned at a competition is a reflection of the hard work our students put in during their class and practice time. By making the most of every lesson, our classes not only teach traditional Irish dancing, but also the value of healthy work ethic, determination, and discipline. In the competitive arena, Clann Kelly dancers are expected to display the highest degree of good sportsmanship—humble in victory, and gracious in defeat.
  • Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild of Texas (CPQG)
Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild of Texas (CPQG)
    Nonprofit;  Special Events;  Traditional Arts
A guild is an association of craftspeople in a particular trade. The earliest guilds are believed to have been formed in India circa 3800 BC, and though they are not as commonplace as they were a few centuries ago, many guilds continue to flourish around the world today. Quilt guilds are abundant and exist in all American states and in many foreign countries. The purpose of this Guild shall be to preserve the heritage of quilting, to promote the knowledge and understanding of all aspects of quilting, and to provide opportunities of continuing education among those interested in the art of quilting. The COASTAL PRAIRIE QUILT GUILD  (CPQG) was founded in 2008 by a group of women who already enjoyed the wonderful comradeship of their quilting bee. Feeling the need for a centrally located guild, they decided to meet near the junction of two major freeways allowing access to quilters from all areas of town. Needless to say they were pleasantly surprised when interest in membership was abundant. With much excitement as well as hard work, the first scheduled meeting of CPQG was held on August 21, 2008. 107 Members joined!!! A diverse range of programs and specialty classes are offered to meet the varying skill levels and interests of members. Monthly meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 10am and the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm. A variety of topics are discussed. From "quilting expert" speakers to show-and-tell, the guild hopes to offer all quilters an avenue to learn as well as make life-long friends.

The Czech Center Museum Houston was founded in 1995 under the name of the Czech Cultural & Community Center. Initially conceived as a home for the Czech-American community in Texas, generous donations allowed us to construct our own building in the Houston Museum District. We moved into our current home in 2004. In the intervening years, historical and cultural artifacts’ contributions lead our board to pivot our mission statement towards historical and cultural preservation. We, therefore, changed our operating name to reflect this new mission. Today, the Czech Center Museum Houston seeks to inspire people to learn from those who sought freedom despite oppressive rulers and systems. We use the example of the Czech and Slovak experience in the United States and in the world as a mirror through which individuals of other cultures can recognize all peoples’ shared humanity.  Along with Slavic Culture and Art, we also host programs and exhibits about other ethnic groups, such as the Caribbean, Mexican, Vietnamese, Uruguayan, Costa Rican, Haitian, and many more. We value our position in Houston’s diverse community and endeavor to be a forum for cross-cultural dialogue. The Czech Center Museum Houston has a small dedicated staff supported by a corps of more than 200 volunteers, of which 20 to 30 do so weekly. With their assistance, we hosted 45 free or low-cost events in 2019. These events included performances by upcoming local artists, international musicians, guest speakers, a Czech Christmas Market, Easter Egg Festival, and crafting and language classes. We also work with other local nonprofits to provide them a venue for their programs. The Czech Center Museum Houston has been working with UH’s Department of History and assistant professor, Dr. Alexey Golubev, since 2018 on several projects. Our museum provides hands-on research opportunities and introduces University students to the workforce with our collaborative research project for our new exhibit and digital project. We are currently developing with the University of Houston Department of History an educational community project, supporting original research with assistance from local humanities students, led by well-established scholars. These research internships are supported by scholarly grants at UH, allowing students to gain practical experience in a real-world museum setting.  The museum strives to be an accessible resource, actively encouraging the study, appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of art, culture, and history. We offer family-friendly events and special programs for children, focusing on personal development and education, complementing the Texas school curriculum.
