Poetry, romance and song. Combine these ingredients to create a charming recipe for a Fruelingskonzert / Spring Concert!
Welcome Spring with the Houston Saengerbund!
The Houston Saengerbund Choirs will perform in both German and Englishon Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1311 Holman. Time: 7:30 pm.
After a cold winter we perform songs that welcome a renewal of life – from a Volkslied to a 17th century tune with the original lyrics written by St. Francis of Assisi in 1225: Ye watchers and Ye Holy Ones. There will be the ever popular Tulpen aus Amsterdam and the tango, Bella Bella Marie, which was sung all over the world when the Andrew sisters performed it in 1948. It will make you want to grab a dance partner and take a spin.
The mixed choir pays homage to the beloved Rhine river, the longest in Germany, with a Beer drinking song: Am wunderschoenen Rhein. In contrast, two songs by Robert Schuman: Laendliches Lied and Die Minnesaenger celebrate this master composer’s ability to compose lovely part-songs for all voices, delicately intertwined.
Please to join us for this free concert followed by a reception to meet the performers. Plan to arrive early for the best seats.
The Houston Saengerbund was founded in 1883. It is Houston’s oldest musical organization. In 2014, the Houston Saengerbund created a program to enlist the participation of young music students in Houston. Their presence in the choirs has enabled the organization to continue the choral tradition. Several of our former students have gone on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, the Houston Opera Studio, as well as companies in Germany and France. Nicholas Newton, baritone, recently won third place at the Houston Grand Opera Concert of Arias and second place at the Houston Saengerbund Vocal Competition.
Mary Koenig and Elmy Biermanns
