A festival to celebrate some of the rich devotional traditions of South Asia. The evening will explore Bhajans from Hindusim, Qawwali from Islam, and Shabad Kirtan from Sikhism.
South Asian Americans are diverse. The religious music of South Asia is important as a devotional practice, but it also serves as a cultural marker. Spiritual Music of South Asia brings diverse religious traditions all to one stage, allowing you to experience the beauty within each.
The music will be presented by well-known Houston ensembles. Bhajans, Qawwali and Shabad Kirtan will be presented. Each genre has musical elements, lyrical themes, and religious significances that will be teased out throughout the presentations.
South Asian Folk Arts is honored to be supported by the City of Houston, Midtown Houston and Texas Commission on the Arts.
