Miller Outdoor Theatre presents Cinco de Mayo at Miller featuring
Natalia Lafourcade (pictured) Sonex (pictured). Presented by Miller Outdoor Theatre in partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston. Sonex will perform alongside Rice University’s Mariachi Luna Llena.
Due to illness, Natalia Lafourcade will not be performing as previously scheduled. She appreciates your understanding. The celebration of Cinco de Mayo at Miller continues as Sonex takes the stage with their signature blend of traditional music of Veracruz and contemporary urban rhythms.
Sonex is a group of young Mexican artists innovating the traditional music of Veracruz. Rooted in the traditional music of great masters such as Doña Elena Ramírez, Don Arcadio Hidalgo, Don Andrés Vega, and Don Esteban, they infuse them with new rhythms and sounds from Jazz, Funk, hip-hop, Rock, and Reggae, among others.
Mexican pop-rock singer and songwriter Natalia Lafourcade will take the stage to celebrate and continue the tradition of Cinco de Mayo at Miller. Rice University's own Mariachi Luna Llena opens the festivities. One of the more colorful and charismatic pop artists to emerge in Mexico during the early 2000s, Natalia Lafourcade debuted in 2003 with a fascinating solo effort before switching to a rock band format, Natalia y la Forquetina, and proved herself worthy of acclaim in whatever guise she chose. Their last show was August 18, 2006, after which point Lafourcade disbanded la Forquetina to resume her solo career. Her fifth album is 2013’s magnificent ‘Mujer Divina – Tribute to Agustin Lara’, which has set common ground between generations and highlights the romantic character of Mexican hearts. The album took home two Latin Grammy-Awards.
Mariachi Luna Llena was an organization started by Alberto Rodriguez at Rice University. Luna Llena became an official Rice University organization on October 3rd, 2013 with the generous support of Dr. Richard Tapia and Mr. David Medina. Since its beginning, Mariachi Luna Llena has shown its quality; during the first public event Mariachi Luna Llena won first place at the Rice International Fest on October 19, 2013. Since then, Mariachi Luna Llena has been featured in local, national, and international news.
