German Film Series: Barbara

Presented by 14 Pews and German Consulate General in Houston at 14 Pews

14 Pews, a non-profit art house, is proud to announce America’s ONLY weekly German Film Series starting May 7th, 2014.

“We are excited to be teaming up with the German Consulate and The Goethe Institut,” says Executive Director of 14 Pews, Cressandra Thibodeaux.  “I look forward to also serving German snacks and wearing my lederhosen,” she added.

“It has been such a learning experience with programming 52 German films, I am so thankful for our advisory board, mostly Louis Black, (who started SXSW and the Austin Chronicle), he’s a specialist with New German Cinema which is the German film movement of the 60s – 80s.  So, we’ll be screening a lot of Fassbinder, Herzog and Wim Wender films, along with many many others.”

The films will screen every Wednesday night, starting at 7:30PM and will be FREE or pay-what-you-can.  Doors open at 7:15PM.

Barbara
(2012, directed by Christian Petzold, 1hr 45 minutes)

Winner of the Best Director prize at the Berlin Film Festival, the latest film from Christian Petzold (Yella, Jerichow) is a simmering, impeccably crafted Cold War thriller, starring the gifted Nina Hoss-in her fifth lead role for the director-as a Berlin doctor banished to a rural East German hospital as punishment for applying for an exit visa.

As her lover from the West carefully plots her escape, Barbara waits patiently and avoids friendships with her colleagues-except for Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld) the hospital's head physician, who is warmly attentive to her. But even as she finds herself falling for him, Barbara still cannot be sure that Andre is not a spy. As her defensive wall slowly starts to crumble, she is eventually forced to make a profound decision about her future.

A film of glancing moments and dangerous secrets, BARBARA paints a haunting picture of a woman being slowly crushed between the irreconcilable needs of desire and survival. Germany's official Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film.
