Presented by Fort Bend County Museum Association at George Ranch Historical Park

The George Ranch Historical Park presents Hands-on History Summer.

Join the George Ranch Historical Park this summer for their Hands-On History Hour every day at 11am and 2pm. These special experiences will be offered throughout the Park and will rotate on a weekly basis all summer long.

SCHEDULE:

JUNE 10-14: 1830s TALLOW IS YOUR FRIEND
Discover everyone’s favorite fat, tallow, with hands-on explorations of this versatile substance.

JUNE 17-21: 1860s HASTY BAKER COOKING CLASS
Learn the inner workings of a wood-burning stove with this interactive cooking class. Who needs electricity when you have wood and iron!?

JUNE 24-28: 1890s WOOD CURLING
Woodworking will become plain to you in no time with this hands-on introduction to the wood plane.

JULY 1-5: 1930s MAKING YOUR MARK
Brands are an essential part of a ranch’s operation. Come learn the history of the brand and create your own leather brand to take home.

JULY 8-12: 1830s FIRE BY FRICTION
Generate fire the old-fashioned way with rope and friction. Can you create a spark?

JULY 15-19: 1860s HERBAL MEDICINE
Explore the science of herbal remedies and discover the roots of modern medicine.

JULY 22-26: 1890s LIFE OF A LINE RIDER
Dust off your cowboy skills and delve into the world of the line rider. Get a hands-on crash course into this labor-intensive and lonely life.

JULY 29-AUGUST 2: 1930s THE ART OF LATCH HOOKING
Ms. Mamie, as many of her generation, was an expert at fiber arts. Come learn the art of latch hooking with this hands-on demonstration.

AUGUST 5-9: 1830s RAWHIDE GLUE
Whip up a batch of primitive glue using cut rawhide the pioneer way. Observe this process first hand and then jump on into the action!

AUGUST 12-16: 1860s SUGAR CANE PRESSING
How does sugar cane become sugar? Help us process some raw sugar cane and fine out!

AUGUST 19-23: 1890s GREENHOUSE PLANTING
Victorians loved their gardens and the Davises were no exception. Help us plant in our greenhouse and learn about the popular plants and flowers of the day.

AUGUST 26-30: 1930s TREE HOUSE FUN
Our special tree house was built for Ms. Mamie in the 1930s. Re-live the past with us as we explore the games and fun held in the tree house’s history
