Anderson Fair

Anderson Fair sits at the confluence of Grant Street, West Drew and Welch in the historic "Montrose" area of Houston, just a short half block east of Montrose Boulevard. The building, a still evolving manifestation of varying degrees of carpentry skill by patrons and benefactors down through the years, structurally reflects the cultural and artistic diversity of Houston since the turn of the 20th century. Many of its timbers, doors, frames, window glass and fixtures came from a mid 19th century structure in downtown Houston, and the aptly named "music room", floored with the red brick of song fame, was once a court yard between the three story structure on the north side of the property and a single story building on the south that dates back to the 1890’s. Legend has it that this southernmost structure was once the law and real estate office of a brother of one of Texas’ governors, and that it stood at the ‘end of the line’ for the Grant Street streetcars. That part of the building has since housed such diverse enterprises as a grocery, a washateria, a headshop, a photography studio and a recording studio.

AvantGarden (formerly Helios)

Helios is now AvantGarden (as of summer 2007). AvantGarden is the home to local live music, the visual arts, writing, private parties, video, film, theater, performance art, serving Houston Texas. "There are five dimensions to this small, two-story house: Downstairs, upstairs, front porch, backyard and patio. At any given time there could be two or three simultaneous events taking place. Performance art, dance pieces, puppet shows and even wrestling matches have been staged here. Don’t get too distracted and forget to order one of their many unique mixed drinks. Their most famous concoction, "Night Helios" is a fiery combination of dark rum, orange liqueur, 151 and a splash of lemon juice. Balinese Room

The legendary Balinese Room nightclub in Galveston has been restored and reopened, after nearly twenty years of neglect and vacancy. "Basically the chill out room to Houston’s venerable hard-partying Continental Club, Shoeshine Charlie’s Big Top Lounge, while not being as raucous as its adjacent bar brother, is really no slouch when it comes to the hip and boisterous drinking scene. When you step inside to this local Houston bar the décor will definitely make you do a double take, but don’t worry, despite the circus atmosphere the only freaks here are the ones you came in with and the only high wire acts are downing canned PBR’s while slamming shots. On some nights, Shoeshine Charlie’s Big Top Lounge has some local live music treat their patrons to a riff or two." Houston.com There was a real Shoeshine Charlie who shined shoes at the original Continental Club in Austin, he has since passed away. When they opened the Houston location, they brought Shoeshine Charlie’s podium to place in the new location. They soon discovered the bar down the way and placed the podium in there and they also started to pull some of the siding off the walls and they discovered a whole bunch of old circus murals painted on the walls. They removed most of the paneling and named the bar, Shoeshine Charlie’s Big Top Lounge!!

Double Bayou Dance Hall

Up until 1935, Double Bayou was one of the most isolated parts of Texas, despite being only 65 miles from Houston. It is the former site of one of the state’s largest Juneteenth celebrations and home to a proud African-American western heritage community. The dance hall is significant in that it is perhaps one of the last of its kind, certainly in Texas if not the greater Gulf Coast.
